Making the Local News!

Our local newspaper, 7 Days, ran a short article on Second Life last Thursday, the 22nd. It mostly focused on the business aspect of Second Life and other similar games. The article names the genre, which also includes games like World of Warcraft and Habbo Hotel, MMOG's, or Massively Multiplayer Online Games. The rest of the article mostly gives numbers about how much real money people spend in virtual games, and believe me, its a lot. I've also noticed that games for Xbox 360 and PS3, and even PC, are starting to include upgrade features that are downloadable, for a cost of course. For example, in Need for Speed Carbon, you can purchase cars you would normally unlock later, download them, and use them earlier to your advantage. However, in Second Life, there is no real objective other than having fun and living large. As the article point s out, with a little real cash, one could purchase really nice virtual possessions. 7 Days hasn't as of yet put the article on line, but they probably will in the next couple days. I'll post it as a comment as soon as they do!

I think it's great that Second Life is getting positive feedback from the local news! This will surely be an asset for us in the proposal that we're going to give in a matter months.

I agree! Let's see how we can contribute to increased positive publicity about Second Life in Dubai. We want to build it up as we get closer to presenting our project at the end of the semester.

Demonstrating the benefits of being engaged with Second Life is key to keeping it available to residents in the UAE.

I used to read 7 Days everyday until it was banned in my neighbourhood this year. Keep working hard so we can avoid the same fate with our project. Thanks for the update Fadiddle!

It's great that word of SL is spreading even if its only in small bits so far. If its publicized more perhaps people can recognize its value and potential in the educational system among other businesses. Also if we're to actually prevent SL from being banned in UAE we've to spread word a long ways still for it gain recognition as a valuable tool. That also gets me to the point that if SL can be used host activities between schools like say a forensics competition, then why not try that next? Its an excellent way to demonstrate Second Life's value as a tool. DAA could be the first to try it out and something like this would also gain great publicity as an added bonus. Using SL to host a competition between two schools from across the world in real time using avatars to represent the candidates. Plus to have been involved in something like this would look great on a college application form. Though it would need a considerable amount of preparation so this could perhaps be something for next year...

Second Life is getting publicity! This is great! However, one aspect of this article that is a little misleading is that Second Life is being compared to video/computer games. I think that this will give the impression that recreation is the only goal of SL. Hopefully people who read 7 Days will recognize the other promises that Second Life holds.
